Rotherham Clearance Order 1933

Badgers Row
Badgers Row is believed to have been off Hardy Street in Thornhill. This area has been taken over by the industrial estate on Hope Street. Hardy Street is still listed on Google Earth but is just the entrance to one of the factory units.

Brinsworth Lane
Brinsworth Lane ran between Brisworth Street and Armer Street. Centenary Way now covers this area. A 1938 map does show Brinsworth Lane continuing for a short while past Armer Street and it is plausable that this section is now the entrance to Booths Scrap.

Burrell Street

Burrell Street

Burrell Street
Burrell Street was off Westgate, going down the left hand side of the Cutlers Arms. A small section of cobbled street can still be seen. Burrell Street went all the way to the River Don. The area is now a car park.

Downs Row

Downs Row
Downs Row still exists. A small road off Margate Street between "Swinton Insurance" and "Barton Real Estate".

The road still exists. From Westgate to the right of the "Get Sorted Academy of Music" which used to be the Wellington Inn.

Westgate Court
I have been unable to locate Westgate Court even on a 1938 map. If you can help please email us at info@old-rotherham.co.uk .

"In 1933 and 1934 Rotherham council obtained 11 clearance orders, many of the slum houses and insanitary yards in the town centre were demolished. Their inhabitants were moved to new council housing estates out of town."
